SUMMARY: Good rehearsal, but pay particular attention to these three notes:
- KING OF THE ROAD: …this song is not ready to be performed in Doug’s opinion and is unlikely to be fixed with one rehearsal.
- WHEN LOVE COMES TO TOWN: Improve: Harmony should be much quieter. BIG PROBLEM.
- WHEN LOVE COMES TO TOWN: Improve: Consistent ending with the lyrics “before love came to town.”
TECHNICAL: I did not adjust the mix after fine tuning Work It.
Here’s the zip file with all the MP3s:
WORKIT:
- Works: Intro
- Works: Rhythm guitar sound and playing.
- Works: Modulation for Work It
- Improve: Solo guitar and guitar sound (should be louder).
- Improve: Drums, be ready for the end.
CAN’T GET NO GRINDIN: likeable because its the only pure blues songs and the stop work.
- Works: Form with the stops.
- Works: Glens vocal expressiveness.
- Works: Backing vocals.
- Works: Fast tempo.
- Improve: Ending was not right even. Got it right after working it.
- Improve: Dead air in the intro and I recommend editing out the “and pretty much everyone else…”
- Improve: Rohn should be ready
- Improve: Glen lead vocals are a bit too loud but they were adjusted for Work It.
- Improve: Glen lyrics 2nd verse.
KING OF THE ROAD: likable song, Rohn’s vocals are good when on key. But, this song is not ready to be performed in Doug’s opinion and is unlikely to be fixed with one rehearsal.
- Works: Rohn’s voice sound great when on key.
- Works: Hit the last “man of means” on key.
- Improve: Rohn needs to jump out of the drum area right away. Reduce dead air.
- Improve: Glen needs to provide the note. I recommend finger picking. Guitar came in clashing with Rohn’s pitch.
- Improve: singing be on pitch when the guitar comes in. For 1st “Man of means”. King of the read end of verse 1. And every handout…
- Improve: Glen’s walk up to first modulation clashes with Rohn’s final phrase: King of the road.
- Improve: Acoustic guitar sound is not good enough. Mic’ing it would be better.
- Improve: Guitar should let the end be accapella?
- Improve: Doug’s finger snapping isn’t loud enough. Even the clapping could be louder. Give him a recommended percussion instrument. Or sit him down at the drums and tell him with single drum to it.
WHEN LOVE COMES TO TOWN: Works when done well (or even close to well). Probably the audience pleaser.
- Works: Intro with crowd voice.
- Works: Opening solo.
- Works: Rohn continuing to play
- Works: Rohn’s singing was almost loud enough.
- Improve: Harmony should be much quieter. BIG PROBLEM.
- Improve: Everyone remember to Yay in the middle.
- Improve: Guitar solo should be louder for V4 call and response.
- Improve: Consistent ending with the lyrics “before love came to town.”
GET THE LOG OUT: Likeable song. Close enough to be performed.
- ISSUE: Intro talk: Longish if no one is listening.
- Works: Outro.
- Improve: When Glen gets used to using the foot pedal he won’t have to noodle between songs.
- Works: Guitar sound and volume on the Intro.
- Works: Backing vocals.
- Improve: Reliable sing backing vocals.
- Improve: Bass reliably play good notes at the end of the verse. Bad on the first verse. 2nd verse was ok.
- Improve: No backing vocals over the solos.
BEAR THE CROSS: Nice alternative with its own unique sound compared to other songs in set.
- Works: Guitar sound.
- Works: Fast tempo.
- Works: Drums fill the song (despite a minor miss hit).
- Works: Drums when there are 8 beat pauses.
- Improve: Add backing vocals in some future performance.
- Works: Solo at the end.
- Works: Accapella ending.
GO TO RIVER: Would be nice to compare with the studio version.
- Improve: First two bars.
- Improve: Rhythm guitar is too busy on 2nd verse.
- Improve: Add harmony someday.
- Improve: Reliably sing back vocals that aren’t “Go To The River”.
- Improve: Guitar solos are consistently inconsistent. Opportunities for inconsistent guitar solos should be shortened and minimized with our current line up.
- Improve: Reliably sing “Go To The River” during the solos.
- Improve: Get used to only two solos.
