SUMMARY: Still lots and lots of work to be ready to perform. Work It and What’s The Matter With The Mill are closest to being ready to perform.
Except where noted, I’m not going to adjust the mix. Here’s the order of the songs I mixed, so the starting point is When Love Comes To Town.
TECHNICAL PROBLEMS: Bass direct has a big hum and not nearly enough gain. Bass sound is ok.
TECHNICAL PROGRESS: Bass bleed in problem eliminated by adjusting the EQ
Here’s all the songs zipped together:
Sun Oct 11 Rehearsal
OVERALL SUMMARY: THERE’S A TONNE OF WORK NEEDED AND MAYBE SONG SUBSTITUTION.
When Love Comes To Town – SUMMARY: Still can’t NEEDS A LOT OF WORK BEFORE BEING READY TO PERFORM (priority order):
- WORKS: Likable song and Glen’s arrangement for the heart of the song is good.
- WORKS: Rohn’s vocals work when he knows the lyrics.
- WORKS: Glen’s vocals are also good thruout.
- WORKS: Guitar solo after Yays! After Yays was good. Glen should make it repeatable.
- Guitar sound could be much better (less distortion, crisper, more high freq). Compare with the Patton’s sound from 17 years ago.
- Guitar leads are very uneven, especially on the bluesy ending (all takes).
- After all that work, we never played the planned ending correctly even once.
- Lyrics need learned (along with the form).
- Bass playing needs more repetitions to be consistent. Hopefully homework will help.
- First Yay by Glen sounds off-pitch and is problematic.
- Yays! Better all together. Should do all three reps that way.
- Glen needs to back off when harmonizing.
- Rohn’s Yays are too loud.
- 2nd Chorus: “I was wrong” innovation is jarring and a negative as it subtracts from a key lyric idea “Maybe I was wrong” with its rhythm. Same thing thruout. It’s pretty rare on a cover to change the lyrics. This one is a mistake. I expect we will not play this correctly when we perform it.
Best Take But With Broken Ending:
Partial Ending (Incomplete) Of What Glen Intended
Go To The River – SUMMARY: We ran the form. Lacks confidence. WHAT WORKS: Verse lyrics. Melody is oddly and likably not obvious.
NEEDS A LOT OF WORK BEFORE BEING READY TO PERFORM (priority order):
- Intro and first verse work.
- First verse would be better with “I don’t want to tell you this” as a complete stop followed by 3 quarter notes. Same thing for “But somebody’s got to do it” followed by 3 quarter note. Similar thru the end of verse. Switch to current rhythm for Verse 2.
- Backing vocals Go to the River need harmony. They are too big on the first time.
- Add clapping somewhere and tambourine to make it build.
- Later versions what follows would benefit with more harmony on certain phrases.
- Of course, the solos are just place holders, but the guitar is not big enough.
Sun Oct 12 Rehearsal
Work It – SUMMARY: Sounds good. Modulation is a big improvement. WHAT WORKS: current form.
NEEDS A LOT OF WORK(priority order):
- WORKS: Guitar sound for the rhythm.
- WORKS: Unison backing vocals. Would it be better with harmony. Singing the “Oh Yeah” and “Oh Yeah Yeah” improves thing.
- IMPROVE: Not too loud on the audience sing along.
- IMPROVE: First Solo should be louder and better thought out.
- IMPROVE: Stop before singing we got the power was awkward.
- IMPROVE: 2nd Solo should be louder and better thought out.
- IMPROVE: Consistency of coming in on the backing vocals.
Whats The Matter With The Mill – SUMMARY: Sounds good. Modulation is a big improvement. WHAT WORKS: current form.
NEEDS A LOT OF WORK(priority order):
- INTRO: Needs to be better phrased and shortened, e.g. This tune is by the great Muddy Waters who heavily influenced Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Cream.
- WORKS: Lead vocals.
- WORKS: Arrangement with stops.
- WORKS: Guitar sound for the rhythm.
- WORKS: Guitar solo is not bad except for the Guitar sound.
- IMPROVE: Sing the right lyrics. LOOK AT YOUR FORM SHEET BEFORE EVERY SONG FOR THE FIRST PHRASE OF EACH VERSE.
- IMPROVE: Backing vocals are too loud.
- IMPROVE: Solo guitar sound is not nearly loud enough, especially at the beginning.
Get The Log Out – SUMMARY: Sounds pretty good. WHAT WORKS: likeable song. The form if done right. NEEDS WORK(priority order):
- WORKS: Lead vocals.
- WORKS: Drumming sounds good.
- WORKS: Ending (if done right).
- WORKS: Scat.
- WORKS: Guitar sound for the rhythm and lead.
- WORKS: Guitar solo lead volume is not loud enough.
- IMPROVE: Don’t sing on top of the actual guitar solo.
- IMPROVE: Guitar solo should be better thought out.
- IMPROVE: Bass should gain confidence with the end of the verse chords (blew the first chorus).
- IMPROVE: Bass 4 beat solo started ok and ended poorly.
Bear The Cross – SUMMARY: Still can’t play it correctly. Candidate for being dropped from the performance. WHAT WORKS: Individual parts mostly sound good. NEEDS WORK(priority order):
- WORKS: Lead vocals with the lyrics are remembered.
- IMPROVE: Make a readable chart. Send Glen a photo of before and after.
- IMPROVE: Play lead guitar parts correctly and consistently.
- IMPROVE: Sing the lyrics clearly and correctly.
- IMPROVE: Guitar sound for the lick before the bridge.
- IMPROVE: Add harmony on the bridge?
- IMPROVE: Lead vocals staying on pitch at the end of the bridge.
- ISSUE: Do you like Rohn’s unison on the chorus? Seems a minor plus to me.
- IMPROVE: GLEN: Remember to sing at the end.
- IMPROVE: Glen back off.
